What is ZUGFeRD and XRechnung?

ZUGFeRD (Central User Guide of the Forum for Electronic Invoicing Germany) is a format for the electronic exchange of invoices between businesses and public authorities. The format was initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and is now widely used across Europe in many companies and administrations.

Both the current ZUGFeRD format and XRechnung are based on the EU standard EN 16931, making them both valid options. Key difference: ZUGFeRD consists of a PDF file with an XML attachment, while XRechnung is a purely XML-based data format.

Profiles and Versions

  • ZUGFeRD BASIC
This profile represents a subset of EN 16931-1 and can be used for simple VAT-compliant invoices.
  • ZUGFeRD COMFORT (EN 16931)
The EN 16931 (COMFORT) profile fully reflects EN 16931-1, focusing on the core elements of an electronic invoice.
  • ZUGFeRD EXTENDED This profile extends EN 16931-1 to support more complex business processes (e.g., invoices covering multiple deliveries/locations, structured payment terms, additional details at the item level for inventory management, etc.).
